Tesla Charging Barn & Play Room

Herndon, VA

Its such a kick to combine the latest technologies with historic preservation.  This 1890’s historic barn was our second project in the Herndon Heritage Preservation District.  After our clients bought their Tesla and called us, we quickly realized the barn had no foundations and rotted wood.  So we rebuilt the barn on new foundations, reusing as many original components as possible — including all reusable framing, siding, and windows, and of course, the iconic barn star.  The equally iconic red paint was found to have lead so we had it stripped and then recreated using a two-color, dry-brush method.  Thanks to the contractor, all new siding was reclaimed from another barn in Virginia.   We added space to accommodate the Tesla, and turned other areas into air-conditioned storage, garden workshop, and a play room for the owner’s young children.

And the key actually works!  Imagine the time warp every morning using a 19th Century skeleton key to access an EV charging station.
